Is Your Google Business Profile Ready for AI Search? Here's How to Find Out.

Laptop with Google search bar on the screen

Google just changed the game, and most home service businesses have no idea it happened.

In June 2025, Google launched AI Search Mode. Instead of showing you a list of links, it now pulls everything together and answers the question right there on the page. No hunting through results. No clicking around.

And when someone searches for a local plumber, electrician, or roofer, where does Google look first?

Your Google Business Profile.

What AI Search Mode Actually Does

When a potential customer types "best HVAC company near me" or "emergency plumber in [city]," Google now generates a direct answer. It might summarize your services, show your rating, highlight your reviews, and display your contact information.

Often, the customer never visits your website at all. And when they do click, they're frequently taken to your Google Business Profile first, not your website.

If your profile is solid, that's a big deal. You show up at the top of the answer looking credible, established, and ready to help.

If your profile is weak or out of date, Google moves on. So does the customer.

What Google AI Actually Looks At

Google doesn't just glance at your profile and call it a day. It checks several things across the web to decide which businesses to show and how to present them.

Here's what matters:

Your profile content and updates.

Regular Google Posts, a complete list of your services, and accurate business information signal to Google that your profile is active and trustworthy. A profile that hasn't been touched in months sends the opposite message.

Reviews and your responses to them.

Lots of fresh reviews and timely responses from the owner, including keywords, signal that you're engaged and reputable. Google also reads what's actually written in those reviews, so when customers mention your specific services by name, that carries real weight.

How customers interact with your profile.

How often do people click your profile, call your number, or ask for directions? These actions tell Google that real customers find you relevant. More activity means more visibility.

Consistent business information everywhere.

Your business name, address, and phone number need to match exactly on your profile, your website, and anywhere else you're listed online. Mismatches create confusion, and Google notices.

Photos.

Businesses with regular, quality photos, including job-site pictures, team shots, and before-and-afters, tend to rank higher than those with bare profiles. Google's AI is now analyzing your images, not just counting them.

A Quick Self-Check

Be honest with yourself on these:

  • When did you last add a post to your Google profile?

  • Have you gotten a new review in the past two weeks?

  • Does your business information match everywhere it appears online?

  • Do you have at least 10 photos on your profile?

  • Have you responded to every review, including the not-so-great ones?

If you said no to more than two of those, your profile probably isn't ready for AI Search. And that means customers are finding your competitors first. Don't worry, it's fixable.

Why This Matters Right Now

AI Search Mode is growing fast, and industry analysts expect AI-powered results to handle the majority of searches within the next few years. For local home service businesses, that shift is already happening.

The companies showing up in AI answers today aren't waiting to see how it plays out. They're getting their profiles in order now.

Your competitors probably aren't thinking about this yet. That's your window.
