5 Google Business Profile Mistakes That Are Costing You Customers

If you have a Google Business Profile and you're not getting leads from it, the profile itself might be the problem.
Most local businesses set up their GBP once and never touch it again. That's a missed opportunity. Google rewards active, complete profiles with better visibility. And right now, 95% of customers check a business's GBP before making a call.
Here are five Google Business Profile mistakes that could be pushing customers toward your competitors.
1. Your Profile Is Incomplete
Missing hours, no photos, a vague business description - these gaps signal to Google (and to potential customers) that you're not active or trustworthy.
Fill in every section. Add your service areas, your business category, your hours, and a description that includes the specific services you offer. The more complete your profile, the better your chances of showing up when someone nearby is searching.
2. You're Not Asking for Reviews Or Responding to Them
Reviews are one of the biggest ranking factors for local search. If you're not actively asking happy customers to leave one, you're falling behind competitors who are.
Just as important: responding to every review, good or bad, with keywords in your response. A business that responds shows it's paying attention. Google notices that too.
Ask for reviews right after a job is done. Make it easy and send a direct link.
3. You Haven't Posted in Months (Or Ever)
Did you know Google Posts work a lot like social media? Regular posts, even one or two a week, tell Google your business is active. They also give potential customers something useful to read before they call.
Share a recent job, a seasonal tip, a promotion, or a quick reminder about your services. Short and consistent beats long and sporadic every time.
4. Your Business Name, Address, and Phone Number Are Inconsistent
This one trips up a lot of businesses. If your name, address, or phone number looks different on your GBP than it does on your website or other directories, Google gets confused. That confusion can hurt your ranking.
Do a quick audit. Make sure your NAP (name, address, phone) is exactly the same across every platform where your business appears.
5. You're Not Using the Services Section
This section is one of the most overlooked parts of a Google Business Profile. When you leave it blank, you miss out on showing up in searches for the specific services you offer.
Add every service you provide; don't just list broad categories. Break it down. If you're a plumber, that means water heater installation, drain cleaning, leak repair, and so on. If you're in HVAC, list tune-ups, installations, emergency service, and anything else you offer.
The more specific you are, the better your chances of matching exactly what someone nearby is searching for.
The Bottom Line
Your Google Business Profile is one of the most valuable free tools available to your business right now. A few small fixes can make a big difference in how often you show up and how many people call.
